6 Great Smoky Mountains National Park

This 815-sq-mile park is America’s most visited, but studies have shown that 95% of visitors never venture further than 100yd from their cars, so it’s easy to leave the teeming masses behind. In total there are 842 miles of trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including 73 miles of the AT, which acts as a border between North Carolina and Tennessee. Clingmans Dome (6643ft) is almost dead center in the park, and is its highest point. The easiest way to get here is to take US 441 to Clingmans Dome Rd – a 7-mile spur road that ends in a paved parking lot. From there it’s a mere half-mile walk to the peak. Sugarlands Visitor Center (www.nps.gov/grsm; 107 Park Headquarters Rd) is a great resource for travelers. You can get backcountry permits ($4 per night) and reserve your campsite here. It has loads of maps and advice, and behind the visitor center is a mile-long nature trail to the modest but lovely Cataract Falls.

The Drive » It’s a quick 3 miles down US 441 from Sugarlands Visitor Center to the heart of downtown Gatlinburg.
